Since launching 360 video on Facebook in 2015, we’ve seen creators, publishers, advertisers and people use this immersive format in many creative ways to share rich stories with greater context. These videos have truly given your audiences opportunities to explore and take control of their viewing experience.
While 360 gives you a powerful way to immerse your audiences in places and moments, we know that it’s not the only way to bring your friends and followers to the action with you and that there are other formats that may suit your story better.
Today, we’re excited to introduce another great immersive format to help you tell your stories on Facebook and in VR: 3D-180 Video.
3D-180 videos immerse your audience in scenes with a full 180-degree wide-angle view in News Feed, and gain extra dimension with 3D depth when viewed in VR.
3D-180 videos are easy to shoot, giving creators control over framing and eliminating the challenge of stitching. This will enable you to think about scenes that naturally work best in 180 degrees by allowing you to determine the exact frame you want to capture and share – such as when you’re filming a live event like a football game or a concert, recording a cooking show or shooting a documentary, like our example below with this friendly sloth in Panama.

Today you can upload 3D-180 videos either through your Page via the video upload flow or through 360 Director for Profiles. Simply upload your video and select ‘half-equirectangular’ as the video type.
Once the appropriate metadata is attached, you’ll be able to share your video directly to News Feed where your friends and followers can view the video as a 180 video in News Feed, or for the ultimate viewing experience, watch it as a stereoscopic 180 video in VR, through the Facebook 360 app for Oculus Go and Samsung Gear VR.
3D-180 Video will also support spatial audio and Live 3D-180 videos so you can capture immersive audio with your video, and capture moments just as they happen with Facebook Live.
For step by step instructions on uploading and sharing your 3D-180 videos, please download our guide and production set-up specifications here. Currently we support videos produced in a side by side half-equirectangular format, including videos produced with the ZCAM K1 Pro and hope to support more cameras in the future.
We look forward to seeing how you use 3D-180 Video to continue telling great immersive stories for your audiences!
